Many students don’t know, but one of the programs we offer here at Meade high is AVID. We talked to Mrs. Sellers, the AVID coordinator and got the inside scoop.
What is AVID?
AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination. It’s to help students in the academic middle, to achieve their plan of going to college.
What does AVID mean to you?
I build relationships and help kids do well in school to make a plan and achieve it.
How does AVID help students?
- It gives them skills to learn in their classes
- It teaches students to be organized and help with time management.
- It teaches them to set goals and prepares students to go to college.
Do you feel like the students at Meade take full advantage of the AVID program?
Most students take full advantage of the AVID program. Sometimes removing a student from AVID and letting them go back to a place that doesn’t have that academic support will help them understand the benefits that AVID offers.
How can we expand the benefits that AVID offers for all students?
Having teachers participate in professional development to understand the methodology that supports students learning.
Finally, throughout your years of teaching AVID, what has been a common pattern among your graduating students?
The students who have got into the program typically go on to a four year university with scholarship money and they typically graduate from college.
As an AVID student for almost all of my high school career, I can attest to the fact that AVID helps students academically, socially, and culturally.
