This month Meade’s AVID program started a fundraiser to raise money to support their students. With donations to this fundraiser, Meade students gain money for field trips to colleges, scholarship opportunities, and open opportunities to build the program. By donating, you get to support the future of AVID students.
AVID’s Mustangs started this year’s education journey with a bang. So far, they have taken two field trips to explore college options. The two colleges they visited were Georgetown University and McDaniel College. At Georgetown, they were guided by a Georgetown sophomore named Emily, who explained Georgetown values, superstitions, possible courses you could take, dorms, and traditions. She described a senior tradition about a clock tower called “Healy Tower.” She said, “ A fun tradition here at Georgetown for the students (Not so much for the administration) is that some seniors climb the tower and steal the clock hands. The clock hands are typically sent to celebrities. They’ve been sent to Ke$ha, Beyonce, and even the Pope, who blessed them.”
The scholars then saw apartment-like dorms that sit on the Potomac River and have a beautiful view of D.C. The scholars also had a wonderful time exploring one of Georgetown’s dining halls. The dining hall offers all-day breakfast for their scholars and a variety of other foods. Their guide described learning opportunities provided by Georgetown and how Georgetown is big on sending its students internationally to explore learning opportunities.
